Natural Dyeing Workshop with Jenny Dean Saturday May 15th 10.30am – 4.30pm Middle Room This workshop is limited to 10 people only & I’m afraid children cannot be included for health & safety reasons. Note: There will be a small charge per person for materials etc
This workshop is for those with a serious interest in learning how to extract and use dye colour from plants & the day will start with a talk explaining the various processes involved. In the morning we will use several traditional dyes, plus a selection of colour modifiers, to achieve a wide range of colours on wool samples. I will also show you how to mordant wool or silk fibres in preparation for dyeing. In the afternoon participants will be able to use up the remaining dye baths to achieve variegated effects on at least one skein of wool or silk yarn. (Note: Skeins must not weigh more than 50gms) Finally, we will fasten small colour samples to sample cards for future reference. I will provide all the dyeing equipment, dyes & fibres for the samples. You will need to bring: Notebook & pen Plastic apron & rubber gloves Hand towel Plastic bowl or bucket At least 1 skein of wool or silk (not necessarily handspun) & weighing no more than 50gm. The skeins don’t need to be mordanted. (By all means bring more as we don’t want to throw away any dye & you could also bring washed fleece or tops.) Rubber bands & strong string in case you want to tie-dye the skeins 4 A5 size cards for your samples Stapler plus staples or a hole-punch for attaching samples to the cards Masking tape or tie-on labels |
All day spinning workshop with Eve Alexander Saturday 18th September.10.30am - 4.30pm (middle room) Bring spinning wheel, spindle and fibre, Eve will have fibre for sale. |
Woad Dyeing Demonstration 2 – 5pm Saturday 16th October This demonstration will show you how to use fresh woad leaves from the garden to produce shades of blue. If you wish, you can bring small samples of wool or silk to dye in the woad vat, such as skeins of wool or silk (25gms max) or unspun fleece etc. (These do not require a mordant.) Also bring a small plastic bowl, rubber gloves and a rubber-backed apron.
